Dr. Dan Rovin, DC is a senior faculty member at The Healing Arts Center in St. Louis, Missouri and at Southwest Illinois College in Belleville, Illinois.  He teaches anatomy and physiology in the massage therapy program at HAC.  He has helped train more licensed massage therapists in the region than probably anyone.   "Dr. Dan" ,  as his students call  him, is known for breaking down the hard science of anatomy and physiology into easy to understand, often humorous presentations to make this essential science memorable.

The English-speaking world calls them the "hamstrings".  I refer to them as Biceps Femoris and the Semi Sisters.  They work against the muscle group most commonly known as the quadriceps.  I teach them as Rectus Femoris and the Vastus Brothers.  Together they are the seven muscles that are most responsible for the movements of the knee.  More importantly (since we stand, walk, run, and jump), they are the seven muscles most responsible for fixating the knee and preventing falling due to knee instability.  Let’s break them down.

Last month I introduced the sartorius muscle as the “group of one”.  It was the first of six, really seven, groups of thigh muscles that I have, or will be blogging about.  In keeping with counting order allow me to discuss the “group of two”, iliopsoas.  Unlike the intentionally misnamed “group of one”, which is a singular muscle and should not be considered a group, “the group of two” is comprised of two distinct muscles.  They are iliacus and psoas major.

Over the next several months we are going to explore the twenty-five muscles of the thigh.  Each month we will break down and explore a group of muscles responsible for hip and knee movement.  If you have been following Danatomy blogs through the HAC website, or Facebook, you might remember that the very first blog was over the "Deep Six" muscles of the buttock. In the classroom I refer to them as the "group of six".  I also discuss the "group of five", the "group of four", the "group of three", the "group of two", and the intentionally incorrectly termed "group of one".  As such allow me to introduce you to sartorius - "the group of one".

Dr. Dan Does Halloween - As HAC President, Dave Kenyon

10/30/2015

Attention To Detail Is Key

Every student that has passed through the hallowed halls of The Healing Arts Center knows Dr. Dan Rovin, DC (known to all as "Dr. Dan").  There is no way to make it through anatomy and physiology at HAC without being exposed to Dr. Dan's often lively sense of humor.  Friday evening, the good doctor's students were given a special treat as one of their favorite instructors showed up for class on the day before Halloween dressed as HAC president, Dave Kenyon.

The costume took no small measure of preparation.  First, Dan had to grow out his hair to a short stubble (he normally shaves his head).  Next, the normally clean-shaven chiropractor grew a goatee  a week or so in advance to conceal the fact that he was actually growing a mustache and soul patch like the one Kenyon wears.   On Thursday, everyone in school noticed the beard as a new look, but on Friday the devious doctor shaved the beard to reveal his true intention.

By adding a "cheerful pastel" shirt, round glasses, faded jeans, an overly formal suit jacket and rubber toed shoes, his costume was almost complete.  There was just one thing missing.  Dr. Dan is an avid soccer player and is in very good shape down to his six-pack abs while Kenyon goes for a full quarter barrel in the abdominal department.  When a staff member suggested at a faculty meeting that Dan should have stuffed his shirt, Dan graciously noted that he only wanted to have fun and not be disrespectful to which Kenyon responded that the stuffed shirt would be hilarious.   Dan, never to be one to miss an opportunity to advance the cause of mirth, added to his costume by the time his 6 pm class started.

The students were in stitches.

Dan was fired Friday evening and is now looking for gainful employment elsewhere.  (Not really.)  True to his word, Kenyon found the costume to be very funny and took the time come to class and show the students how complete the charade really was.   Meanwhile, the bookstore staff reports that a meditation cushion is missing from the store.

Happy Halloween from all of us at HAC!
